People & Food

People in Switzerland are true to their essence and also open to the world. They love keeping their national recipes, which they eat from time to time, and deepin in their worldwide gastronomic knowledge almost every day. Food is a way of discovering more of themselves and of the huge and fascinating world they live in.

Swiss people are also known for having a good quality of life and an exquisite taste. They work, yes, but also enjoy a lot and their quality standards are really high. They love exploring to the fullest and taking their discoveries with them. They are real foodies and the best guides to take you into a worldwide tour just in one Swiss street. If you want to enjoy like a local: surrender yourself to the world.

They also enjoy differently food in summer and winter. Lakes, nature and sun are good reasons to have lunch in a terrace, make a picnic or enjoy a food-truck experience in the countryside; while scents of wood-burning fires and pine waft through Switzerland's roads in cooler months will guide you into a lost cottage in the mountains, with the fire always on, warm food and a snowy landscape seen from the window. Swiss homes, where friends gather for hours, are waiting this time of the year for slices of raclette to melt, while drinking copious glasses of local Fendant wine.

Mountains, clocks on time to have lunch and a melting pot gastronomy are waiting for you, when will you come in?

Food made with Love

Swiss cuisine combines influences from the German, French and North Italian cuisine. However, it varies greatly from region to region. Mind you, many dishes have crossed the local borders and become firm favourites throughout Switzerland and many of the dishes are hearty fare that come from its heritage of agriculture and good Swiss milk. One could quite easily explore Switzerland travelling from cheese dairy to cheese dairy, where cows are used to listen to yodel between the mountains (you need to watch The Sound of Music if you don't know what we are talking about) and sometimes even sing it. :)

If you need a heavier connection with Swiss food and cheese, then you can choose between a raclette, melted cheese served with "Gschwellti" (jacket potatoes), cocktail gherkins and onions as well as pickled fruit. Rösti (pronounced rush-T), roasted potatoes with cheese or bacon on top, is a renowned dish in German speaking Switzerland that you should also try; and then, Älplermagronen, Papet Vaudois, Basel-style roasted flour soup, tartiflette (in Haute-Savoie) and polenta and braised beef (Ticino speciality) are other delicacies to chooseâ"¦ or try them all!

Jumping to the sweet taste, in which Swiss people are real experts: besides clocks and other Swiss inventions, Birchermüesli is said to be one of them. Developed around about 1900 by the Swiss doctor Maximilian Oskar Bircher-Brenner, it contains oat flakes, lemon juice, condensed milk, grated apples, hazelnuts or almonds and it will melt into your palate for breakfast in the morning. And, last but not least: Swiss chocolate! Renowned since the 19th century with the invention of milk chocolate and conching (fondant chocolate). Swiss chocolate is creamier than Belgian one due to its higher milk content and it contains less cocoa and more sugar. Think of (or dream with) Toblerone, Lindt and other swiss brands and make your heart beat happier for a while. :)
